A collection of nine improvisational arrangements by Phil Garvin and Daniel Ziesemer.

The arrangements in this collection have their origins in improvisations that were developed over several years as Phil Garvin and I played together. It began in the months of recovery following Mr. Garvin’s stroke. In an effort to resharpen his skills, Mr. Garvin invited me to join him in playing hymns during the dinner hour at a local senior care facility every other Monday evening. We had many special times of music-making together and eventually developed a list of songs that we would regularly play. This led to the recording and production of the CD album “I Believe in Miracles” which included 26 hymns. Each selection was played by heart in the recording session without the use of printed music. Now, years later, it is my joy to notate these improvisations and make them available for other musicians to play and bring hope, encouragement and blessing to those who hear.

In a style all his own, Mr. Garvin uses unique harmonies in the piano parts that add a rich depth and support to the violin parts, all while being surprisingly easy to play. The violin parts strongly carry the melody, while including simple embellishments and double-stops, adding expressive interest and beauty. These features make the arrangements attainable for intermediate players and are also well suited for advanced musicians.
